TFT: Luxury
Preface: So I’m new to this Thought for Thursday thing. I had made the decision last week after all kinds of people that I have totally been reading always do it and I LOVE when they do because it makes me think…and some days (Thursday’s in particular) are days that I will take that moment or two to really ponder (this person started it for me, and then she linked to this funny lady and this one too and now I totally want to be in the club). So last week I added on my to do list - think of something to write for TFT. Over the course of the week I had things jumping out at me screaming PICK ME for TFT - topics were wearing Spirit Pins alla high school football cheerleading urging me to take that topic. The funniest thing happened though - they just flew away - directly out of my brain - I don’t know if it was my left ear or my right but the only one that I’m remembering is Feeling like a grownup. So I’m really hoping that next Thursday I’ll have had the good sense to write them down so that my TFT is more well TFTy.
Luxury. I love that word. Everything about that word is sweet. Other words like Splurge or Treat or Indulgence make me feel like those things are temporary or illusive or technically not really allowed. So my thought for Thursday is Do you live moments of Luxury? Or do you Indulge and have the guilt to prove it?
About four weeks ago I had a brain shift about what items were Luxury items to me and what things were Indulgences. Let’s play a word association game where I name a product, service, activity and you qualify if that item is an Indulgence or a Luxury.
- Spa Day
- Cleaning Service
- Full Priced Maternity Cloths
- Girl Scout Thin Mints
- Vacation to sunny beach
- Very expensive bedding
- Custom Made Window Treatments
- Netflix
- Heated Seats
- Personal Trainer
- Meal Delivery Service
- Concert Tickets
Four weeks ago I believed that all of those items were Indulgences. Some of them I still think are while others I have done a brain shift. The ones that I have done the shift of feeling on are:
- Cleaning Service - they come every other week and do the heavy lifting cleaning. They are here now. I love them. I can not believe that I looked at this as an indulgence for so long when it clearly makes me feel so happy and relieved. I’m enjoying my life more and that feels rather luxurious.
- Full Priced Maternity Cloths - after feeling really down about the burgeoning bump and the lack of sale items that I found that I really wanted I did it - I bought full priced maternity pants from Gap. It’s a luxury that I enjoy every single morning when I don’t dread the WHAT are you going to cover you self with today? question.
- Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookies - I tried a box of the Keebler variety and while they are good - you can totally tell that they make theirs trans-fat free. Because of this I believe that Girl Scout Cookies are a luxury and I just have to find myself a Girl Scout.
- Heated Seats - It’s cold here in NY. Cold may not even be the right word for it…it’s frigid, ridiculously cold and when shopping for the second car I realized that Heated Seats were no longer an Indulgence they were a Luxury - one that I should be partaking in on every future car I ever own (even when we do someday make it big and move to Sunny Santa Barbara I’m going to want heated seats in my convertible…and yes, I’ve thought about that in great detail) because you can’t underestimate the value of warm buns. You just can’t.
So my question for you is? What Luxuries do you revel in? And what Indulgences do you want to shift over to Luxuries?

* Spa Day - This is an indulgence… because it’s a whole DAY… however I do get an hour-long massage once a month and that’s just a luxury

* Cleaning Service - Indulgence (because I don’t have one… not that I wouldn’t LOVE it).
* Full Priced Maternity Cloths - Hmm… I’d say more indulgence… I bought most of my stuff from Target, Old Navy, or Gap Outlet, but I bought a couple of spendy things and they were WORTH it.
* Girl Scout Thin Mints - Are you kidding me? These are a MUST. I’m surprised they even made this list.
* Vacation to sunny beach - Luxury… we try to do this at least once a year, vacation is like crack to me.
* Very expensive bedding - Indulgence, I’m happy with t-shirt sheets from Target.
* Custom Made Window Treatments - Indulgence, I’d never know the difference.
* Netflix - Luxury, this only costs us like $5 a month, so not a big deal.
* Heated Seats - Luxury, I live in freaking northern Minnesota.
* Personal Trainer - Indulgence? But something else I would LOVE to have and then would probably consider a luxury.
* Meal Delivery Service - Indulgence
* Concert Tickets - Luxury
And welcome to TFT.
I used to have a cleaning service come in every couple of weeks and would love love love it. But then as my kid got older and was more mobile and like a little person, I realized that the house looked exactly the same the night the cleaning people left as it did th e night before. It is impossible to keep things clean with a toddler. Impossible. So, we stopped, and though I do miss it dearly, it made sense.
I did buy a few outfits of regular priced maternity clothes, because I was so damn uncomfortable in everything else.
And spa days and thin mints should go hand in hand.
Most of my comments with be “indulgence” because I really don’t do JACK anymore. But, I’m still having a hard time differenciating the difference in my brain
+ Spa Day - Indulgence
I’d have been all over Luxury Item.
+ Cleaning Service - Indulgence
+ Full Priced Maternity Cloths - Luxury, had to have those Seven maternity jeans and I wore them all the time. Oh boy, I felt HOT!
+ Girl Scout Thin Mints - Hmm, if you had said the other kind that are carmel, chocolate, coconut (I can’t remember the new name, something that starts with an ‘S’
+ Vacation to sunny beach - Indulgence, but, I wouldn’t feel guilty. It’d just be rare.

+ Concert Tickets - Luxury
My 2 year-old is going gaw-gaw over a Williams Sonoma catalog right now - INDULGENCE!
good post. i have actually been thinking about these things and what i’ll have to cut out in the future, turning the luxuries into indulgences… but for now:
- Spa Day - indulgence. i so seldom do this sort of thing and when i
do i feel like i should be spending all that money on something else!
- Cleaning Service: luxury. i’ve wanted one of these for soooo long.
- Full Priced Maternity Cloths - indulgence. i felt guilty when i bought full price, i did really well on ebay, bought boxes full for cheap! and i lucked out and got some great stuff that FIT.
- Girl Scout Thin Mints - these are a staple. when do cookies come in again? you’re making me hungry.
- Vacation to sunny beach - luxury. that’s pushing it. we think of vacations as “needed” around here. like sleep.
- Very expensive bedding - indulgence. sadly, i probalby wouldn’t know the difference much…i’m not really picky and these just can’t be justified to me.
- Custom Made Window Treatments - same as above
- Netflix - luxury. no real opinions on this one. when we do rent i actually like to drive to the store and look.
- Heated Seats - oh lord. i LOVE my heated seats. but until they make a heated CARSEAT i refuse to turn them on when i’m driving with the baby because i’ll be toasty and baby might not be… because i tend to turn down the heat when my buns are toasty
- Personal Trainer - indulgence. i don’t think i would ever do this. maybe a nutritionist/meal planner/life taker-over-er. ha ha.
- Meal Delivery Service - luxury. i so badly need something like this since i have kids and bosses to answer simultaneously to all day. (what’s the difference right?)
- Concert Tickets - luxury. this is like vacation. getting out. having fun.
jaime - the “s” word you’re looking for is SAMOAS! MMMMMM
p.s. flattered that you think i’m funny!!
I think you’re pretty funny Cass! Welcome to TFT!
*Spa Day - Indulgence. Like I’d get a whole day to myself - RIGHT!
*Cleaning Service - Indulgence. I do all the cleaning so if I had this, it would be like heaven on earth.
*Full Priced Maternity Clothes - Indulgence. Most of my stuff was from Target.
*Girl Scout Thin Mints - Call it what you want - I am expecting my order any day! Yes! I like the peanut butter ones too - OOOH BABY!
*Vacation to sunny beach - Indulgence. I agree with Jaime on this - it is just a rare thing. I would live on the beach - my husband - would hate it.
*Very expensive bedding - Indulgence. I don’t care what kind of sheets I have.
*Custom Made Window Treatments - same as above!
*Netflix - Luxury. Plan on signing up to this soon!
*Heated Seats - Luxury. I NEED THESE!
*Personal Trainer - Indulgence. I would LOVE to have one of these - especially if his name was Bob and he wore blue. Oooh yeah baby.
*Meal Delivery Service - Indulgence.
*Concert Tickets - Luxury. I don’t really go to concerts too often.
